Abstract
Objective: To study most common injuries of polytrauma patients, to expand knowledge and improve the initial approach and treatment of these patients in hospital. Literature review: Among traumatic injuries, traumatic brain injury represents the major cause of disability and mortality in the world; secondly, thoracic trauma, that is often associated with hypovolemic shock, hemothorax, rib fracture and pneumothorax. On the other hand, abdominal injuries have the spleen as the most affected viscera; followed by the liver and kidneys. Furthermore, pelvic fractures, usually secondary to high-energy trauma, have a high mortality rate. In this way, the high incidence and volatility of trauma in society, highlight the importance of studies with the ability to evaluate a greater number of variables and patients, with the aim of optimizing screening, initial resuscitation, and definitive treatment of victims, in order to reduce unfavorable outcomes. Final considerations: The systematization of initial care for polytrauma victims is the gold standard in the care of these patients, focusing not necessarily on the diagnosis, but on the control of the most serious injuries, seeking better outcomes for them.
