Abstract

Objective: Evaluate the diagnostic capability of carotid artery calcifications (CAC) in panoramic radiographs by dentistry students from the 5th to the 10th semester. Methods: The research was conducted on the institution's premises, utilizing a Google Forms questionnaire to collect data on participants' knowledge regarding CAC in panoramic radiographs. Results: The findings of this study revealed that over 50% of the 105 students are familiar with the definition of CAC in panoramic radiographs. However, an equivalent number expressed a lack of confidence in diagnosis and uncertainty about post-diagnostic procedures. This gap underscores the need to enhance practical training, especially in skills related to identification and appropriate referral of CAC cases. The direct association between CAC and cardiovascular risks emphasizes the importance of educational interventions to ensure that future professionals can effectively contribute to early detection and proper referral of vascular health-related conditions. Conclusion: Strengths of the study include significant awareness among students regarding CAC in panoramic radiographs. However, limitations include students' lack of confidence in diagnosis and appropriate procedures, highlighting the need for further training in this area.
