Abstract

Objective: To understand the assessment of professionalism in medical residency through an integrative review. Methods: For the review, the terms from the Medical Subject Headings were: “professionalism”, “evaluation”, “medical residency” and “medical education”; “profissionalismo”, “avaliação”, “residência médica” and “educação médica” from Descritores em Ciências da Saúde. They were simultaneously searched using the Boolean operator “AND” in the Virtual Health Library, PubMed and ScienceDirect databases. Full publications were selected, with free access, in Portuguese, English and Spanish over a period of five years (September 2018 to September 2023). Results: A total of 2,172 articles were found in the integrative review and 2,145 articles were excluded after reading the titles; of these, seven were duplicates, six were not relevant after reading the abstract and six were not in line with the theme after reading in full, leaving 16 articles selected to make up the review. Final considerations: It is considered that there are varied methods for teaching and evaluating professionalism in medical residency and that there is no standardization on the best way to prepare and assess it.
