Abstract

Objective: To identify the main causes and effects of anxiety among professionals and students of a dentistry course, in the post-occupational accident period, which occurred between February/2016 and February/2019. Methods: This is an exploratory descriptive research with a qualitative approach. Data collection occurred through the application of a semi-structured questionnaire in which the criteria consolidated in the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ) checklist were considered from a convenience sample of participants with the profile that was desired to be studied. Results: The research reports reveal feelings of post-accident anxiety, such as: fear, dread, insecurity, worry, nervousness and despair. Conclusion: Concerns related to physical and mental health, such as symptoms of anxiety, fear and worry, were identified as important stress factors among respondents. Therefore, it is possible to infer that dentistry professionals and students still feel unsafe in the face of occupational accidents with potentially contaminated biological material, impacting the service provided to patients. Overcoming these feelings and knowledge about behaviors to be carried out in cases of post-occupational accident anxiety can enhance dentistry professionals and students, demonstrating professional maturity and technical competence.
