Abstract

Objective: To analyze the impact of work for the elderly, the challenges faced by elderly individuals who remain in or retire from the labor market, and the changes in social and health aspects resulting from these choices. Methods: Integrative literature review in the databases Web of Science, Scopus, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), and Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE/PubMed), identifying the impacts of work for the elderly in the last 5 years (2019-2023). The descriptors "Elderly" AND "Work" and "Retirement" AND "Health Impact Assessment" OR "Psychosocial Impact" were used. Results: Out of the 1,383 articles obtained in the initial search, after screening, 12 articles met the inclusion criteria and comprised the final review. Final considerations: Work can be both beneficial and challenging for the physical and mental health of the elderly, depending on various factors such as job quality, labor market conditions, and implemented employment policies. Lifetime job stability, along with the promotion of favorable work environments, can significantly contribute to the well-being of the elderly and to healthy and active aging.
