Abstract

Objective: To report a case of intestinal intussusception in an adult patient, resulting from a rare polyp in the small intestine, presenting with intestinal obstruction. Case details: Man, 68 years old, presenting with prolonged abdominal pain, distension, change in intestinal pattern, hyporexia and weight loss of 6 kg for 4 months. After initial investigation with imaging tests without specific results, he was taken to the hospital with signs suggestive of an obstructive acute abdomen. Computed tomography diagnosed intestinal intussusception. After undergoing segmental enterectomy, a polyp was identified as the primary etiology. The anatomopathological examination defined the lesion as a rare benign pseudotumor with a fibroid and inflammatory appearance. Final considerations: In adults, intussusception is an uncommon manifestation of obstructive acute abdomen and is usually associated with some underlying intestinal disease, including intestinal polyps. Unlike what occurs in children, due to the risk of malignancy in the adult population, intussusception must be treated surgically. Recognizing different manifestations and etiologies facilitates the daily routine of surgeons in the early diagnosis and adequate management of the disease, avoiding a worsening of the patient's prognosis.
