Abstract

Objective: To describe cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in the State of Tocantins during the years 2020 and 2021, based on projections calculated from death data registered between 2015 and 2019. Methods: A retrospective and cross-sectional methodology, using public secondary data from the Mortality Information System (SIM) and DATASUS. Deaths due to CVD in individuals over 20 years old were analyzed, applying regression methods and generalized additive models to adjust overdispersion and capture nonlinear data trends. Results: Changes in CVD number of deaths were observed in Tocantins in the years 2020 and 2021, with reductions in total deaths of 6.06% and 2.72%, respectively. There was an increase in deaths among males for the two years analyzed, with increments of 0.42% in 2020 and 13.8% in 2021. Additionally, the municipality of Araguaína showed a decrease in number of deaths, with reductions of 29.4% in 2020 and 26.2% in 2021. Conclusion: The pandemic affected CVD mortality in Tocantins, emphasizing the need for public health approaches that consider inequalities in access to care, demographics, as well as the importance of maintaining CVD control and prevention interventions.
