Abstract

Objective: To understand the experiences of self-management of care for people chronically ill with liver cirrhosis. Methods: Qualitative, descriptive and exploratory research carried out in a municipality in Southern Bahia with six people diagnosed with Liver Cirrhosis. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews between October 2022 and August 2023, and analyzed using Bardin's content analysis, revealing four thematic axes. The study received approval from the Research Ethics Committee. Results: The self-care mentioned were alcohol abstinence, pharmacological treatment, changes in diet and fatigue management, which resulted in the categories 'body adaptation: the importance of rest', 'management of drug therapy in everyday life', 'adoption of a healthy diet to improve quality of life' and 'dealing with alcohol withdrawal'. Aspects were revealed that highlight the routine of self-management of intimate and personal care, shaped by the influence of the social group and the meanings constructed throughout life. Conclusion: It is concluded that it is necessary to develop educational interventions and more personalized care for patients and family caregivers, aiming at knowledge and motivation to adopt care in order to avoid CH decompensation and improve quality of life.
