Abstract

Objective: To assess the repercussion of sleep quality on common mental disorders in medical students. Methods: Cross-sectional quantitative study with a sample composed of medical students from a college in Northeast Brazil. Data were collected using a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI-BR), and the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21), all self-administered. Results: The sample included 137 students, predominantly women (74.5%), aged 18 to 24 years (81.80%), and of white race (81.80%). Poor sleep quality was reported by 56.2% of the students. It was observed that 46.7% had sleep problems before starting their studies, highlighting the need for mental health attention since the pre-university period. Additionally, 39.4% of the students received psychological or psychiatric support before the course, and 36.5% after enrollment. In the six periods of the course evaluated, mental disorders were present at moderate levels, with 46.8% of the students showing depression, 54.3% anxiety, and 16.7% stress. Conclusions: Poor sleep quality was found among medical students and the presence of common mental disorders throughout the course. The results demonstrate the need for interventions to improve sleep quality in this population.
