Abstract

Objective: to evaluate the level of stress perceived in university students. Methods: The present academic work is a cross-sectional study of a qualitative and quantitative nature with a convenience sample. University students over 18 years of age of both sexes participated in the study. The inclusion criteria for the subjects were individuals of both sexes over 18 years old, higher education students from the second academic semester onwards, regardless of the course or shift. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of Centro Universitário de Maceió (UNIMA). Volunteers responded to the PSS-10 questionnaire (10-item Perceived Stress Scale). Descriptive analysis of the data was carried out and to compare the questionnaire scores, the t-test for independent samples was used, considering p ≤ 0.005. Results: 144 volunteers participated in the study, 102 (70.1%) female and 42 (29.9%) male. The average age of the participants was 23.13 years (± 4.86). The mean PSS- 10 score was 22.38 (± 2.96). Conclusion: According to the results of this study, a high level of stress was evident among university students. Factors such as gender, physical activity, presence of psychiatric disorders, smoking and working hours have not been shown to have a significant influence on the incidence of stress in this population.
