Abstract

Objective: Identify the physical disabilities of people with leprosy living in a former colony hospital. Methods: This is an exploratory descriptive study, with a quantitative approach, regarding the findings of dermatoneurological examinations performed in a group of 20 people with leprosy sequelae in a former colony hospital in the state of Piauí. The examinations were performed from June to September 2023, using two instruments: the Simplified Neurological Assessment Form and Classification of the Degree of Physical Disability in Leprosy and the Leprosy Suspicion Questionnaire. Results: The participants were mostly male (85%), with a mean age of 64 years and grade 2 physical disability (75%). The patients had sequelae of the disease, such as lagophthalmos, claws, muscle atrophy, trophic and traumatic lesions, bone resorption, and impaired visual acuity. Feet (65%) and eyes (75%) were the most affected segments, while numbness in the hands and feet (75%) and tingling (60%) were the predominant sensory alterations. Conclusion: Physical disabilities caused harm to the quality of life of people with leprosy, highlighting the limitations in daily activities. The importance of early diagnosis and adequate treatment is emphasized, aiming to prevent sequelae and promote physical and mental health.
