Abstract
Objective: To analyze the characteristics of Postpartum Hemorrhage (PPH). Literature review: PPH is due to hemodynamic instability caused after birth, corresponding to blood loss greater than 500 ml in vaginal birth and greater than 1000 ml in cesarean section. The main etiologies responsible for its triggering are represented by the “4T” mnemonic: tone, tissue, trauma and thrombin. Associated with hypotension, tachycardia, vertigo and palpitation, PPH constitutes an obstetric emergency that requires quick and efficient intervention. For this reason, the “Golden Hour” in the management of PPH is established, with the aim of reducing morbidity and mortality. Management is directed to each etiology, so it is extremely important to follow the approach protocol so that measures are established effectively and without wasting time. Given the severity and recurrence of PPH episodes, preventive measures are established in the routine of all professionals who assist patients in labor. Final considerations: PPH is a relevant topic in the context of public health, it is a frequent complication with high maternal morbidity and mortality in Brazil and the world, which requires thorough and effective management by the entire multidisciplinary team.
