Abstract

Objective: Describe bipolar disorder associated with lithium treatment. Methods: Integrative literature review based on relevant scientific journals, such as PubMed and Scielo. The review had a timeframe of 5 years, from 2019 to 2024. The study outcome was integrated by applying the PICO strategy (acronym for P: population/patients; I: intervention; C: comparison/control; O: outcome) to guide data collection. The PICO strategy is a mnemonic that helps identify key topics where: P: Patients with bipolar disorder; I: Treatment with lithium; C: Patients with bipolar disorder not using medication; O: Incidence of manic episodes. Final thoughts: Lithium remains an effective therapy for bipolar disorder, preventing manic episodes and reducing the risk of suicide, with long-term neuroprotective benefits. However, its use requires strict monitoring due to side effects and the risk of toxicity. Furthermore, new research could provide additional data on lithium's efficacy across different populations and age groups, optimizing its use in managing bipolar disorder.
