Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) in the prevention of recurrent herpes labialis (RHL). Methods: An integrative literature review was conducted with searches in electronic databases (PubMed and Virtual Health Library - VHL) from 2012 to 2024. Randomized clinical trials and other relevant studies comparing PBMT with pharmacological therapies were included, focusing on outcomes such as pain reduction, lesion size, and recurrence rate. The research question was developed using the PICOS strategy, guided by the question: “What is the clinical protocol for photobiomodulation in the treatment of recurrent herpes labialis?” Results: PBMT is effective in reducing the frequency of recurrences, lesion size, and pain intensity, especially when combined with antivirals. Protocols with higher energy density and a greater number of sessions yielded better results, although standardization of therapeutic parameters is needed. Conclusions: PBMT represents a promising, painless, and safe alternative for the prevention and management of RHL. However, additional clinical studies are necessary to consolidate its efficacy and optimize protocols.
