Abstract
Objective: To conduct an integrative literature review and to carry it out the guiding question: "What are the effects of dental veneers on the adjacent periodontium?". Methods: The Pubmed, Scielo, VHL and Google Scholar databases were used to search using the following keywords and/or in combination: dentalveneers, laminate venners, porcelain, ceramic, gingival health, periodontium effects and periodontitis. Studies published between 2013 and 2023, with the descriptors cited, in English, Portuguese, French, and Spanish, were included. Human studies, randomized and non-randomized clinical studies, prospective and retrospective clinical studies, and cohort studies were included. The exclusion criteria were: theses, monographs, book chapters, literature reviews and systematic reviews. Results: In the end, 12 articles were the object of this review. Final considerations: The use of ceramic dental veneers is a method with predictable clinical and aesthetic results, but it can occasionally cause inflammation, plaque buildup, bleeding, gingivitis, and gum recession. Maintaining periodontal health is possible with the monitoring and control of the dentist, who must have a thorough knowledge of the benefits and disadvantages of this treatment.
