Abstract

Objective: To characterize the profile of patients hospitalized with kidney failure in a referral hospital in the city of Campina Grande, Paraíba. Methods: This is a quantitative, descriptive, and retrospective study based on the analysis of secondary data from DATASUS and SIH/SUS. Sex, age, race, year and month of hospitalization, type of care, mortality rate, number of deaths, length of hospital stay, and hospital costs were collected. The study period covered November 2023-November 2024, with the Hospital Municipal Pedro I as the reference institution. Results: A predominance of male patients (61.3%) and individuals over 50 years old (72.5%) was observed. Most patients were of mixed race (48.7%), reflecting potential socioeconomic disparities. All hospitalizations were emergency cases, suggesting late diagnosis and lack of prior medical follow-up. The mortality rate was 21.2%, with higher lethality among the elderly. The average length of hospital stay was 9.9 days, with longer stays observed in the 50–59 age group. The average hospitalization cost was R$ 1,546, with a greater financial impact on elderly patients. Conclusion: The findings emphasize the need for early screening policies, expansion of primary care, and implementation of preventive strategies to reduce hospitalizations and improve the prognosis of kidney failure.
