Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the risk of metastatic calcification and nutritional status in patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD). Methods: A case series study conducted in dialysis centers in Recife-PE, in 2016. The data were collected through interviews and medical record analysis. The anthropometric assessment included dry weight and height for Body Mass Index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and arm circumference (AC). Tests such as urea, parathyroid hormone, albumin, and lipid profile were collected from the medical records. The risk of metastatic calcification was analyzed using the calcium-phosphorus product (Ca×P). The data were analyzed using SPSS software, and the study was approved by the Ethics and Research Committee. Results: Ninety patients were analyzed, of which 17.8% were malnourished based on BMI, 46.7% based on albumin, and 44.4% based on arm circumference (AC). The Ca×P levels, used as an indicator of metastatic calcification, were elevated in 57.8%. The duration of HD, urea, parathyroid hormone, and lipid profile showed a positive correlation with Ca×P levels. Conclusion: A high occurrence of malnutrition was found based on albumin and AC, elevated Ca×P levels, and an association between HD duration, parathyroid hormone, and lipid profile with Ca×P, highlighting the importance of nutritional and biochemical evaluation and monitoring to prevent complications and improve the prognosis of these patients.
