Abstract

Objective: To assess whether family structures (biparental or single-parent) influence the demand for healthcare services, thereby affecting children's health care. Methods: This is a retrospective cross-sectional study based on microdata from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (PNAD Contínua). An econometric strategy was employed using the logistic function to estimate the effects of the variables of interest and control on the probability of health care. The parameters were estimated using the Maximum Likelihood Estimator (MLE).Results: The analysis of healthcare service utilization, based on medical consultations in the last 12 months and routine check-ups, highlights the need to examine explanatory variables to identify significant patterns. A significant influence of family and individual factors, particularly related to household income and the education level of the head of the family, was observed. The results indicate that single-parent families tend to have less favorable outcomes. Conclusion: Biparental families demonstrated more favorable results in terms of child well-being, particularly regarding the performance of routine consultations and the use of healthcare services in the last 12 months.
