Abstract

Objective: To verify the effectiveness of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) in the treatment of nicotine use disorder in schizophrenic patients. Methods: The present study is a systematic review that sought to verify the effectiveness of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) in the treatment of nicotine use disorder in schizophrenic patients. The review included randomized clinical trials, available in English, from the PubMed, MEDLINE, ELSEVIER, SCOPUS and MedRxiv databases. The studies were independently selected by two reviewers, with quality and bias analysis using the Jadad and RoB2 scales. Results: The systematic review included five clinical trials that applied high-frequency EMT sessions (10-20 Hz) in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex of small samples. The results were varied, with some studies observing a reduction in the number of cigarettes consumed, while others showed no significant effects. Final considerations: The review concluded that there is a positive clinical significance for the use of EMT for nicotine-dependent patients, with a decrease in nicotine compulsion. However, studies with larger samples and new therapeutic approaches are still needed.
