Abstract
Objective: To compile and analyze the most recent evidence on toxoplasmosis during pregnancy. Literature review: In Latin America, the prevalence of toxoplasmosis in pregnant women is notably high, mainly attributed to the consumption of undercooked meat and exposure to contaminated soil. After ingestion of sporulated oocysts or tissue cysts, Toxoplasma gondii releases its infectious forms, the tachyzoites, which quickly invade the host's intestinal epithelial cells. Infected newborns may present a classic triad of symptoms: chorioretinitis, hydrocephalus, and intracranial calcifications. In cases where fetal infection is confirmed or strongly suspected, the combination of pyrimethamine and sulfadiazine, along with folinic acid, is recommended. Conclusion: The diversity of clinical manifestations and the need for accurate diagnostic methods highlight the relevance of continuous surveillance and training of healthcare professionals to reduce the impact of congenital toxoplasmosis on maternal and child health.
