Abstract

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate hygiene conditions and the presence of vulvovaginitis among incarcerated women. Methods: This was a cross-sectional, exploratory, quantitative study conducted in August 2024 with 123 women from a women's penal colony. A structured questionnaire developed by the authors was used. Descriptive and inferential statistics were applied, using the Chi-square test. Data were processed using SPSS software, version 22.0. Results: Most participants self-identified as mixed race (59.3%), were aged between 26 and 35 years (34.1%), single (65.9%), had a low level of education (51.2%), and a family income below the minimum wage (90.2%). A majority reported taking more than three showers per day (85.4%), brushing their teeth more than three times daily (87.8%), washing their hair one to two times per week (44.7%), and changing sanitary pads one to three times a day (49.6%). Among women reporting vulvovaginitis (71%), 81.4% noticed a whitish discharge, 81.4% reported a foul odor, and 52.5% experienced itching. Conclusion: The hygiene of incarcerated women is significantly affected by social and cultural issues, and especially by precarious infrastructure and lack of adequate healthcare, leading many to develop vulvovaginitis.
