Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the renal activity of mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni BH strain and treated with Saccharomyces boulardii CNCM I-745, through the quantification of biochemical markers, aiming to investigate possible protective effects of the probiotic on kidney function during Schistosomiasis. Methods: Female Swiss Webster mice (n=70) were infected with Schistosoma mansoni BH strain, and seven experimental groups were established, including negative and positive controls, groups treated with Saccharomyces boulardii for different periods, and a group treated with Praziquantel. After the interventions, serum levels of uric acid, lactate, urea, creatinine, and albumin were measured as indicators of renal function. Results: The groups treated with Saccharomyces boulardii showed a significant reduction in uric acid, creatinine, and lactate levels compared with the positive control group. Improvement in urea and albumin levels was also observed, especially in the groups subjected to longer interventions, as well as in the group treated with praziquantel. Conclusion: The administration of Saccharomyces boulardii CNCM I-745 reduced biochemical alterations associated with Schistosoma mansoni BH strain–induced renal dysfunction, indicating a potential nephroprotective effect as an adjuvant in the treatment of schistosomiasis. Administration of Saccharomyces boulardii mitigated biochemical alterations associated with renal dysfunction induced by Schistosoma mansoni, suggesting a potential nephroprotective effect as an adjuvant in the treatment of schistosomiasis.
