Abstract
Objective: To identify elements that influence the decision-making of healthcare professionals regarding palliative and end-of-life care, as well as to assess the self-confidence profile of these professionals in providing this type of care. Methods: Exploratory, descriptive, quantitative research conducted in two hospitals in a municipality in the Campo das Vertentes region, as well as a private oncology clinic and a regional center of volunteers for cancer prevention and control. The Bonn Palliative Care Knowledge Test (BPW) questionnaire was administered. Results: 95 healthcare professionals were interviewed. The mean age was 37.6 ± 10.7 years, and 69.5% were female. Regarding who should be considered to participate in the debate on decisions to refuse or discontinue treatment, the most frequently cited healthcare professionals were physicians (72.6%), psychologists (71.6%), and nurses (70.5%), with 88.4% stating they wished to die suddenly at home. The self-confidence assessment revealed that all questions were answered correctly most frequently, ranging from 53.7% to 75.8%. Conclusion: Palliative care requires constant emotional closeness, and its philosophy advocates avoiding any therapeutic obstinacy interventions, respecting bioethical concerns.
