Abstract
Objective: To analyze the prevalence of exogenous poisoning due to suicide attempts in Campina Grande, Paraíba, Brazil, comparing it with the state and national averages between 2007 and 2024. Methods: An ecological, descriptive, and quantitative study was carried out using secondary data from the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN/DATASUS) and population estimates from the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics). Prevalence rates per 100,000 inhabitants were calculated, and a temporal analysis of notifications was performed, considering the period from 2007 to 2024. Results: A total of 924,413 cases were recorded in Brazil: 13,529 in Paraíba and 3,950 in Campina Grande, Paraíba. The average prevalence rates were 464.5/100,000 population in Brazil, 347.9/100,000 in Paraíba, and 940.5/100,000 in Campina Grande. There was an upward trend in reports, with a sharp increase after 2011 and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The prevalence in Campina Grande was 2.7 times higher than the national rate and 2.6 times higher than the state rate. Conclusion: The study highlights a high prevalence and significant growth in poisonings due to suicide attempts in Campina Grande, Paraíba, indicating the need for specific public policies, expansion of the Psychosocial Care Network, and strengthening of mental health prevention and surveillance actions.
