Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the nutritional status and diagnosis of cachexia in cancer patients receiving palliative care at a referral hospital in Belém, Pará. Methods: A cross-sectional and analytical study was conducted with 24 cancer patients receiving palliative care. Nutritional status was assessed using the NRS-2002 and ASG-PPP screening tests, along with anthropometric measurements (weight, usual weight, height, BMI, %PP, CB, CB adequacy, and CP) and the PPS. To identify cachexia, patients were stratified into symptomatic pre-cachexia, asymptomatic pre-cachexia, symptomatic cachexia, and asymptomatic cachexia. Results: All individuals presented some degree of nutritional risk, malnutrition, and severe malnutrition according to NRS-2002, BMI, and ASG-PPP, respectively. Similarly, the entire sample presented severe weight loss according to %PP, CB depletion, low muscle mass according to CP, PPS below 50%, and a diagnosis of cachexia, the latter being mostly symptomatic. Conclusion: Malnutrition and cachexia were diagnosed in oncology patients in palliative care. Therefore, it is necessary to implement protocols for their identification, aiming at early diagnosis and promoting comfort, quality of life, and dignity.
