Abstract

Objective: Identify the most effective physiotherapeutic interventions in the treatment of temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) and associated neck pain. Methods: This is a systematic review of the literature, guided by the following question: what is the impact of physiotherapy intervention in individuals with TMD? Searches were conducted in the following databases: PubMed, PEDro, and Cochrane Library. The inclusion criteria were randomized controlled clinical trials with physiotherapy interventions for TMD and neck pain. The information extracted included: bibliographic data, sample characteristics, physiotherapy interventions, instruments used, and results. The risk of bias was assessed using the PEDro scale. Results: Eighteen studies published between 2000 and 2024 were included, covering 1,119 patients. The treatments applied in the experimental group mostly included manual therapy techniques. The experimental groups that received physiotherapeutic interventions showed significant improvements compared to the control groups. Manual therapy combined with therapeutic exercises was more effective in improving pain intensity, mandibular and cervical mobility and functionality, and reducing pressure sensitivity at trigger points. Conclusion: One might consider that physiotherapy interventions were effective in reducing pain and improving function in patients with TMD associated with neck pain, especially when multimodal interventions were used.
