Abstract
Objective: To identify Binge Eating Disorder (BED) among university students, as well as the attitudes that favor and/or suggest the disorder and its relationship with academic experiences. Methods: This was a quantitative, cross-sectional, and analytical study conducted with 316 university students, aged between 18 and 59 years, of both sexes. For the classification of binge eating, the Binge Eating Scale (BES) was used, and for recording psychosocial aspects, the Academic Experiences Questionnaire (AEQ) was employed. Mean comparisons were performed using the Student's t-test or ANOVA for variables with a normal distribution, and the Mann-Whitney test for variables without a normal distribution; for proportion comparisons, the chi-square test was used. A significance level of p < 0.05 was considered. Results: A low prevalence of BED was observed. Factors that may favor binge eating included "eating without physical hunger," "obsessive thoughts about food," and "impulsivity when eating." Conclusion: The aspects of academic experiences most associated with attitudes suggesting or favoring binge eating were the presence of tiredness/sleepiness and the worry of not being up to date with academic assignments. Understanding such relationships is useful for proposing strategies to help prevent the occurrence of BED and other eating disorders.
