Abstract

Objective: Identify the prevalence of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in children in the Northeast region of Brazil, in the period from 2014 to 2024. Methods: This is a descriptive, exploratory, and retrospective study, with a mixed approach, quantitative and qualitative, developed based on the collection and analysis of epidemiological data available on DATASUS. Results: The analysis revealed a significant and consistent number of hospitalizations for pediatric leukemias in the Northeast, totaling 55,383 cases during the studied period. The geographical distribution was heterogeneous, with emphasis on the state of Pernambuco. The predominant epidemiological profile corresponded to males, with age ranges of 1 to 4 years and 5 to 9 years, and a higher proportion of self-declared mixed-race individuals. It was observed that ALL (ICD-10 C91) was responsible for the highest number of deaths among the leukemic subtypes. The results also suggest a relevant interface between chromosomal abnormalities and childhood ALL. Conclusion: A limitation related to the lack of detail in SIH/SUS records was identified, which hinders the precise measurement of the specific prevalence of ALL. These data are important for health management actions and public policies.
