Abstract
Objective: To describe the operationalization of urgent and emergency care for patients requiring palliative care, viewed through the lens of the fundamental pillars of palliative care. Methods: An integrative literature review was conducted, searching databases such as BVS, SciELO, PubMed, MEDLINE, LILACS, Google Scholar, LATINDEX, and Acervo+ Index Base. The search utilized the descriptors "Palliative Care," "Nursing Care," "Nursing," and "Emergencies," interconnected by the Boolean operator AND. Studies published between 2014 and 2025 were included. Results: The fundamental pillars of palliative care—pain control, compassionate communication, family support, and teamwork—were identified within the urgent and emergency care context. Symptom control was the most frequently addressed pillar, although it did not appear in every study included, reflecting the nature of these units. Assertive communication (including the SPIKES protocol), teamwork, and family support were also identified as elements of compassionate and effective care. Final considerations: While symptom control receives greater emphasis, the integration of all pillars is essential. Despite the limited number of specific studies, this work reinforces the need for a palliative approach in urgent and emergency services, encouraging professionals to adopt these pillars to provide comprehensive care in alignment with the Brazilian Palliative Care Policy.
