Abstract

Objective: To analyze the pharmacist’s role in community drugstores and its contribution to access to healthcare, identifying practices performed, challenges faced, and strategies for strengthening this field. Methods: This is a descriptive study with a qualitative and quantitative approach, conducted with seven pharmacists working in drugstores in a municipality in southwestern Bahia, Brazil. Data collection was carried out using a structured questionnaire addressing professional profile, performed activities, training, challenges, and perspectives. Data were organized and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: There was a predominance of professionals with up to six years of experience and a higher proportion of females. The most frequent activities included medication dispensing, injectable drug administration, and pharmacy management, indicating role overload. Professional training was mainly focused on operational demands. The main challenges identified were structural limitations, workload, lack of remuneration for services, and low integration with other health professionals. Despite this, participants recognized their contribution to patient follow-up and safe medication use. Conclusion: The pharmacist’s role remains constrained by structural and organizational barriers. The study highlights practical challenges in daily practice, with the small sample size as a limitation.
