Abstract
Objective: To evaluate clinical evolution of patients with pseudarthrosis who underwent surgery with volar plate and cortico-cancellous graft of iliac bone wing. Methods: Seven patients undergoing surgical treatment of scaphoid pseudarthrosis were evaluated. Wrist movements were evaluated with a goniometer; hand grip strength with hydraulic dynamometer; patients were asked their routine activities after fracture; patients to rate their current level of pain on an analog scale; an upper limb functional assessment was performed based on the Mayo Wrist Score as well as an x-ray image assessment. Results: there was less wrist flexion on the affected limb (mean=44°) than in the unaffected limb (mean= 88.5°). The affected limb reached 60% less strength than unaffected limb. Nevertheless, all patients achieved bone healing after surgery, six returned to unrestricted activities, and all were rated by Mayo Wrist Score with good and satisfactory functionality. Conclusion: This study demonstrates to the scientific community the true results, advantages and disadvantages of using plaque in the treatment of scaphoid pseudarthrosis, and the technique provides satisfactory results.
