Abstract

Objective: To describe the scientific evidence about the development of lung cancer due to smoking, being one of its main risk factors. Methods: This is an integrative review of the literature, which is established as one of the resources used in evidence-based practice, using the PICo strategy. To guide this study, the question was formulated as non-clinical: "What scientific evidence points to smoking as a risk factor for the development of lung cancer? ". Data collection took place in November 2017. Results: A total of ten articles were included in the present review, both in the English language (100%). The vast majority of publications were in the year 2013 (4/40%). The United States was the country where the largest number of studies were concentrated (6/60%). Regarding the type of study, the control case studies were predominant. The main themes of the studies talked about the active and passive exposure to smoking, smoking as the main risk factor for lung cancer and the interaction of cigarette and its particles associated with lung cancer. Final Considerations: It was evidenced that smoking is the main risk factor for developing lung cancer and that cigarette smoke has a high carcinogenic capacity, therefore, the study has brought important information to the context of lung cancer, thus contributing to knowledge of readers and researchers in relation to the subject and about the cessation of smoking.
