Abstract

Objective: To evaluate spirometric variables and functional capacity of patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD) and compare with healthy individuals. Methods: 17 volunteers, both sexes, between 50 and 80 years old, divided into two groups: Parkinson's Group (GP) with 11 individuals with PD, classified up to level III of the Hoehn and Yahr Disability Stage Scale, in ON phase of medication and Control Group (CG) with 6 healthy individuals. The One Flow Portable Spirometer FVC KIT was used for pulmonary variables (PEF, FEV1, FVC and FEV1 / FVC), the modified BORG effort scale for perceived effort and the Glittre Daily Activity Test (GT) functional capacity. After the Shapiro-Wilk test, the data were analyzed using the Man-Whitney tests and Spearman correlation with the aid of the IBM SPSS Statistics software, adopting a significance level of p <0.05. Results: The GP presented the worst performance in FVC (p = 0.037) and in GT (p = 0.010). In the GP, there was also a moderate correlation between GT and the Tiffeneau index (p = 0.034). Conclusion: The GP presented worse FVC and functional capacity, which can be attributed to the decrease in respiratory capacity observed in the correlation of GT with the Tiffeneau index, of these patients.
