Abstract
Objective: To describe the epidemiological characteristics of meningitis in Piauí, Northeast Brazilian state, between 2007 and 2017. Methods: Descriptive, retrospective study with quantitative method. Its development occurred through secondary information that was treated and interpreted to construct this study. Results: Greater prevalence was observed in male and brown subjects. Children aged 5 to 9 years and adults aged 20 to 39 years were the most affected by the pathology, with frequencies of 19.13% and 26.35% of reported cases, respectively. Corroborating with findings from the literature, viral meningitis was more frequent (47.80%). The results showed a high cure rate (87.52%). Conclusion: It is revealed the need for other research on meningitis in the studied state, because in the whole investigation, there is currently little data on the disease, which makes it difficult to construct a comparative analysis.
