Abstract

Objective: To assess the knowledge of health professionals of the Hospital das Clínicas Samuel Libânio on the concepts of biosafety and verify the application of these concepts by health workers in their day to day. Methods: We applied a semi-structured questionnaire and a checklist for workers in the Intensive Care Unit and the Clinical Laboratory. Results: By analyzing the data, we saw that almost all workers have a knowledge of the term Biosecurity and understand the need for good practice in their daily work. Know and perform the aseptic measures before and after the procedures, but some still believe that the need is only when dealing with an obvious risk, as for example, when dealing with a patient in isolation. Professionals agree to continuing education as a way of always pointing out the presence of a real risk in the workplace. The results of the check-list shows that 100% of workers are vaccinated against Hepatitis B and Tetanus, 100% know the procedures in the event of an accident and know that they are exposed to infections in the workplace. 100% use disposable gloves, 48% use goggles, 76% use mask and 90% use coat. 48% of workers studied had experienced needlestick accidents with cutting and 52% had contact with patient body fluid. Conclusion: The workers studied have the knowledge of the concepts Biosafety, but through the results, we conclude that these concepts are not fully applied in their day to day work.
