Abstract
Objective: To estimate the prevalence of overweight and obesity and to associate this disorder with climacteric phases. Methods: An epidemiological cross - sectional and quantitative epidemiological study with 866 women in the climacteric attended by the Family Health Strategies of the rural and urban area of the city of Montes Claros, Minas Gerais. Were considered overweight women with IMC above 25.0. The association between IMC and the climacteric phases were analyzed by the chi-square test, adopting significance level of p <0.05. Results: The prevalence of overweight among the women in the study was 74.1%, considering BMI. When analyzing overweight and obesity between the climacteric phases, it can be observed that there was no significant association between pre-menopausal and pre-menopausal women. Conclusions: The study indicates a high prevalence of overweight and obesity among climacteric women and no differences in body weight between phases. These findings point to the need for interventions, adopting public health measures in primary care to control overweight and obesity, in order to prevent mortality in this population group.
