Abstract

Objective: To analyze the increase in Burnout Syndrome cases among health professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic, identifying its effects, causes, consequences and prevention. Bibliographic review: Burnout can be understood as a reaction to excessive stress in the professional environment. The reasons that trigger the Burnout Syndrome are comprised of interpersonal conflicts, psychological distress and low emotional support. With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, new risk factors for the development of Burnout were revealed. Among the main causes are the employee's fear of being socially stigmatized for their direct action with the virus and the continuous worry of transmitting the disease to their families. The social isolation and the need for removal imposed by the family due to the health condition aggravated the exhaustion of work, since family support and social support were seen as protective elements and largely formalized in prevention. Final considerations: These professionals developed anxiety, depression, insomnia and other conditions of stress, leading to increased development of the syndrome. Studies on the subject can help in planning health promotion actions.
