Abstract
Objective: To investigate the scientific evidence on segmental and focal glomerulosclerosis associated with Covid-19. Methods: An integrative literature review study of a qualitative nature with a descriptive and exploratory approach. The following databases were used: Scielo, Pubmed and Scopus. Data analysis included pre-analysis, material exploration and data processing. After selection and critical analysis, the studies were arranged in a synoptic table for the definition and composition of the analytical categories that answered the guiding question of the research. Results: Ten articles were found consistent with our objective. The exact mechanism of how Covid-19-associated glomerulopathy occurs is not known. However, studies indicate, through histopathology, the presence of viral particles in the cytoplasm of podocytes, as well as the presence of cytokine release syndrome in patients with severe inflammation-induced Covid-19. Final Considerations: Glomerulopathy associated with Covid-19 has been shown to be present with preference in black patients and patients with APOL1 risk variants, with poor renal prognosis. Thus, this study presents scientific evidence that requires further rigorous research with the intention of monitoring the patient for early signs of kidney damage and thus reducing the risk of developing AKI with Covid-19.
