Abstract
Objective: To analyze the available evidence on the efficacy of SGLT2 inhibitors in preventing heart failure in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: This is an integrative literature review carried out through the PubMED, Virtual Health Library (VHL) and CAPES Periodical databases, using the descriptors: “Sodium-Glucose Transporter 2 Inhibitors”, “Prevention”, “Adults” and “Heart Failure” and obtaining the search truncation: (Sodium-Glucose Transporter 2 Inhibitors) AND (Prevention) AND (Heart Failure) AND (Adults). A total of 367 articles were found, filtered according to inclusion criteria (Portuguese, English and Spanish; period from 2020 to 2025; full articles) and exclusion (duplicate articles, abstracts, out of scope). Results: SGLT2 inhibitors effectively prevent heart failure in type 2 diabetics through multiple cardioprotective mechanisms that go beyond glycemic control, such as natriuresis and hemodynamic improvement. Final considerations: The response to treatment and the extent of benefits, including renal and cognitive protection, are influenced by patient characteristics, reinforcing their strategic and early use.
