Abstract
Objective: To describe the scientific production about the alteration of the intestinal microbiota by the use of therapeutic substances and the influence on neurodegenerative disorders. Methods: This is an integrative literature review. Data collection was performed using the National Library of Medicine (PubMed) and Virtual Health Library (BVS) databases, with a time frame from 2012 to 2022. Results: Using the established descriptors, 121 articles were obtained and of these, 34 were excluded for not being related to the theme, 60 for being reviews, 8 for duplicity in databases and 1 for being outside the time frame. Finally, 18 articles were selected to compose the sample group. The results were organized into three categories: Importance of the intestinal microbiota for the nervous system, therapeutic substances and the alteration of the intestinal microbiota and the impact of the alteration of the intestinal microbiota in neurodegenerative disorders. Final considerations: The intestinal microbiota plays a fundamental role in the intestine-brain axis, showing that dysbiosis is related to neurodegenerative pathologies. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), β-glucan and probiotics have a special influence on Parkinson's Disease and Alzheimer's Disease, with prevention, improvement of the condition and delay of evolution.
