Abstract
Objective: To analyze the characteristics of radiographic Axial Spondyloarthritis (r-axSpA) or Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) and non-radiographic (nr-axSpA). Bibliographic review: Axial spondyloarthritis is an ongoing inflammatory disease ranging from non-radiographic axSpA to radiographic axSpA. The condition is defined by axial joint involvement, often sacroiliitis associated with peripheral arthritis, and extra-articular involvement (uveitis, inflammatory bowel disease, enthesitis, and psoriasis. A classic and key symptom of axSpA is inflammatory back pain (IBP). The symptoms of axSpA create a significant burden for patients and society as they significantly interfere with quality of life. Final considerations: AxSpa is a rheumatic disease whose prevalence is 1.4% and which can interfere with patients' daily activities. Thus, treatment aims to reduce disease activity and prevent disability, improving the patient's quality of life. Disease management includes NSAIDs as the first therapeutic option, followed by biologics and other disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs. In addition, non-pharmacological treatment based on physiotherapy and physical exercises is also indicated in addition to patient education about the condition.
