Abstract
Objective: Understand the characteristics and outcomes of COVID-19 vaccine-related myocarditis. Bibliographic review: Rare events, such as pericarditis and myocarditis, have been reported in patients receiving mRNA vaccines from companies such as Pfizer and Moderna. These events usually occur within the first 14 days of vaccination and are more common after the second dose and in men between the ages of 12 and 30. The main symptoms are chest pain, shortness of breath, or palpitations. It is necessary to confirm the diagnosis with complementary tests, which are performed in a hospital emergency room. This evaluation includes electrocardiogram, dosage of cardiac necrosis markers (troponin and CK-MB), and imaging tests (echocardiogram, CT scan, or MRI) included in the evaluation. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic for pain control. The known risks of COVID-19 and its potentially serious complications, such as post-COVID-19 conditions, hospitalization, and death, far outweigh the potential risks of a rare adverse reaction to vaccination, including the potential risk of myocarditis or pericarditis. Final considerations: The risk-benefit analysis of the COVID-19 mRNA vaccines yields positive results in favor of vaccination, as the number of cases prevented is exponentially greater than the number of adverse events reported.
