Abstract
Objective: To analyze the characteristics of retinoblastoma (RB). Bibliographic review: RB is the most common malignant intraocular tumor in children, caused by mutations in the retinoblastoma gene (RB1) located on chromosome 13q14.2. RB affects about 1 in 16,000 live births. Autosomal dominant inheritance is observed in 30 to 40% of cases, while the non-inherited sporadic type is responsible for the remaining 60 to 70%, with the average age of diagnosis being 1 year for hereditary cases and 2 years for sporadic cases. The main symptoms are leukocoria and strabismus. Final considerations: RB is highly curable when diagnosed early. Therefore, its management involves rapid identification and appropriate treatment. Diagnosis is clinical with fundus examination, with biopsy being contraindicated. Therapy depends on the degree of ocular or systemic involvement, and cryotherapy and laser photocoagulation can be used for low-risk tumors or intra-arterial chemotherapy, systemic chemotherapy and enucleation for more advanced and metastatic cases.
