Abstract

Objective: To compare the teaching plans of three medical schools located in Brazil and with those with the Guidelines of the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO). Methods: A documental analysis was conducted evaluating the teaching plans of the of the ophthalmology content in three medical schools in Brazil, being one private and two public (one statal and the other a federal institution). Results: The documental analysis identified that the workload attributed to ophthalmology was compatible with the suggestion from CIO in two of three medical schools evaluated. Additionally, the contents proposed by CIO were not fully contemplated, and, because of that, the minimal skills obtention in ophthalmology cannot be guaranteed once the PEs analyzed were too summarized and not detailed, implying a risk of not obtaining of minimal skills in the medical students. Conclusion: We conclude that there is a risk that students will not acquire the minimum skills in Ophthalmology for a general practitioner, which may result in them not acquiring the minimum necessary skills.
