Abstract
Objective: To analyze the orthognathic specialty in parallel with oral and maxillofacial surgery, writing based on the literature about patient orientation, treatment protocols and professional behavior. Bibliographic review: Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that treats the correction of bone discrepancies, reestablishing dentofacial harmony. It needs a greater expansion of the theoretical approach, since knowledge of both areas is essential. Because oral and maxillofacial surgeons and orthodontists share the same mechanical principles of orthodontics, as well as treatment steps and patient care. In order to achieve clinical success and a better relationship between professional and patient. Final considerations: From this study it was possible to report that most post-surgical problems are changes in the patient's appearance and paresthesias. Therefore, it is necessary that the surgeon and orthodontist discuss in detail about orthosurgical cases, avoiding civil lawsuits involving the professional part, patient dissatisfaction, lack of information and facial changes without prior information.
