Abstract

Objective: To assess university students' mental health and lifestyle during the Covid-19 pandemic, identifying the associated personal and academic profiles. Methods: A cross-sectional epidemiological study was conducted with 571 university students from a Brazilian Federal University. They responded a virtual questionnaire. Results: It was found high level of stress and reduced welfare among university students. About half the participants reported loneliness, and most scored for depression. The profile of university students most poorly evaluated in terms of mental health was female, younger age, undergraduate student, no employment, increased family conflicts, and decreased income during the pandemic. The lifestyles of this public changed during the pandemic, with increased exposure to screens and a high prevalence of insomnia. Conclusion: This study shows university students’ difficulty adapting to the pandemic context, highlighting their vulnerability to mental illness. The results may raise awareness among educators and health professionals regarding the need to accompany the university students throughout undergraduate and graduate studies, with special attention to moments that requires adaptations to a new reality.
