Abstract
Objective: To provide a description of the prevalence of the posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in refugees, its risk factors, barriers to access to mental health services, as well as limitations of traditional diagnostic criteria and coping alternatives. Literature review: PTSD is a common condition among refugees, influenced by exposure to traumas during the migration process, such as violence, family and cultural losses, and adaptation to new sociocultural environments. Studies indicate that factors such as time of exposure to trauma, age, gender, and social support influence the prevalence and severity of PTSD in this population. Challenges persist in reintegration, including language barriers, discrimination, and social stigma, which can negatively affect access to treatment and the quality of life of refugees with PTSD. Final considerations: The implementation of culturally sensitive and evidence-based public policies is essential to mitigate the impacts of PTSD and promote the inclusion and well-being of refugees in Brazil.
