Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the self-perception of the impacts of oral conditions on the quality of life of smoking patients using the OHIP-14 instrument. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study involving 48 smoking patients treated at the UFMA dental clinics between 2015 and 2016. Clinical criteria included periodontal indices such as probing depth, gingival index, clinical attachment level, and visible plaque index. The OHIP-14 questionnaire was applied to measure quality of life impacts related to oral health. Results: Most participants were male and aged between 20 and 40 years. The prevalence of periodontitis was high, with generalized stages I and II being the most frequent. Most patients reported a moderate OHIP-14 impact, which was higher among those with a longer smoking history. Female patients reported a stronger impact compared to males. Additionally, the duration and intensity of smoking were associated with worse periodontal conditions and greater quality of life impairment. Conclusion: Smoking negatively affects periodontal health and compromises patients’ quality of life, especially among long-term smokers.
