Abstract
Objective: To describe the resuscitation thoracotomy technique, its indications and gather information from studies on its performance, to provide evidence-based data and help general surgeons and emergency room physicians in their decision making about the use of this technique. Bibliographical review: The results demonstrated that resuscitation thoracotomy is useful in saving lives, but it is conceivable only for patients suffering from severe trauma (especially penetrating ones) with in extremis cardiac arrest. Because this type of trauma is an extreme emergency, requiring a procedure that needs to be performed immediately, resuscitation thoracotomy is commonly performed outside the operating room, and there is not always a general surgeon available in the emergency room. Final considerations: This study warns that hospitals that receive emergency patients after trauma carry out training and qualification of their professionals to receive these patients, since they may need a resuscitation thoracotomy, which can be the difference between life and death for these patients.
