Abstract

Objective: To characterize families of children with Down Syndrome in a social and emotional way by obtaining psycho-affective, sociodemographic, medical and support care. Methods: An exploratory, cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out, with a qualitative approach, where families with a child with Down Syndrome were interviewed using a electronic questionnaire, between September 2021 and April 2022, in a municipality in the state of Minas Gerais. Results: The sample consisted of 30 families who responded to the electronic questionnaire, 86.7% (n=26) of which were answered by the children's mothers, who had a median age of five years. The characterization of the families showed that 70% (n=21) had completed higher education, 33.3% (n=10) had a family income equal to or greater than six minimum wages, 53.3% (n=16) had diagnosis of Down Syndrome made at the time of birth, 90% (n=27) reported having received support from their partner or a family member at the time of diagnosis, 73.3% (n=22) started physiotherapy treatment until the third month of birth. child's life, and 93.3% (n=28) with speech therapy. Conclusion: It was evident that children are mainly cared for by their mothers, undergo multidisciplinary monitoring and that monthly family income was not a parameter of statistical divergence in the sample.
